We are very proud of our team at Roslyns.
Many of our colleagues have been with us for a long time, and have gained qualifications and developed their careers over those years with us.
As part of celebrating our team we have started a series of colleague profiles.
This month we have an interview with one of our Chartered Accountants,
Chloe Battersby:
When did you first start with Roslyns, how did your journey start, and what first attracted you to Roslyns?
I started with Roslyns nearly 12 years ago, in July 2013. I was 17 years old.
At that point, I was an A Level student at Thomas Rotherham College, and I was just looking for an apprenticeship for accounting to study AAT.
At that point, I'd applied for a scholarship through Kaplan, and it was actually them that found me Roslyns and told me they were advertising for an account manager's job. I felt like it was a little different because we obviously just provide account services for the hospitality sector. So it just appealed to me a little bit more.
You started as an apprentice — what was that experience like, and how did it shape your career?
I really enjoyed it because I felt like obviously being an apprentice you work alongside studying at the same time. So, while you're studying, you're able to then apply what you're learning into real life situations rather than just studying and having scenarios given to you. It just lets you apply that knowledge, and then you're learning as well as you're working as well.
I then actually won the Kaplan Scholarship, which meant that was able to not only just study AAT, I was then able to move on to the ACCA as well.
You're now a chartered accountant which is a great achievement, what support did Roslyns give you as you progressed toward becoming a chartered accountant?
They've been really good from like the start. Obviously, they allowed me the time out of work to attend college. They then paid for all my exams because the scholarship didn't actually cover the fees for the exams. So, Roslyns paid for all of that, and they also gave me all the relevant training that I needed to be able to apply my knowledge better myself and become stronger in the roles that I was given at Roslyns.
What’s your role now and what do you enjoy most about your work?
I'm an accountant within Roslyns. I'm an all-rounder, really. I work on management accounts and help the management account team out. I do annual accounts ready for the filings with Companies House, calculate corporation tax. I also work on the self-assessments when it comes close to January, and then also I like to help out my colleagues who come to me for help. I like to be able to know that I can help them and that they can come to me with any questions they have.
What have you learned along the way — professionally or personally — that’s stuck with you?
Basically, just if you put your mind to it and you work hard, you can achieve because working through my chartered exams at the time was very tough. It was time consuming, it wasn’t just the time that you had at college you also had to work the weekends or evenings revising for the exams.I remember actually setting my alarm at like 5:00 on a Saturday and a Sunday when I used to live at home because I had a little brother. That was the only time the House would be quiet. So, I would be up at 5:00 revising.
What would you say to someone thinking about starting their career at Roslyns?
I just think Roslyns is a great company. They've really supported me. Lisa and Paul especially, they've been very supportive. They've always been there when I needed them. Also my colleagues. I've made a lot of lifetime friends through Roslyns. So, I do. I think it's a great company.
I've always enjoyed my time here. I've been here 12 years, so that must say something.
